My Philosophy
I recently heard a point of view that the truly smart people of the world are depressed, while the happy people are really just stupid since they don't see how much life sucks. This caused me to rant a little bit. I'll share my rant here.
Just because I choose to see the good in life does not mean I'm stupid. Life is not enjoyable. I know this. But I can choose to moan and bitch about how much life sucks, or I can choose to move on and enjoy what I can. Even the lowliest human on Earth has good things happen to him/her. Life itself is beautiful! Life is a mixture of good and bad, like all of nature: yeah, the hare dies, but the wolf lives because of the hare; yeah, the leaves fall off the trees, but they turn pretty colors when it happens; yeah, people get killed in horrible ways, but people are saved and are born and are loved and remembered in wonderful ways. This balance is celestial. There are very brilliant people who are very depressed, I'll grant you. Those people die young. Just imagine how brilliant their flames would have gotten if they had allowed them to burn for a while longer.
People who only see the bad parts of life are selfish. They only think of their own sorrows and sufferings, instead of looking around and realizing, wow, some people have it a lot worse than me, I should be grateful to be simply miserable instead of maimed or abused or horribly scarred.
I think the main reason why people get depressed is because they think they're completely alone. It's true, no one can completely know me as well as I do. But you know, I think I make good company for myself.

A very rational, and mature, philosophy! That depressed people are upset at those who are not is normal, that there are those who try to bring everyone down to their level is selfish indeed.

well said
but sometimes there are reasons beyond the core that those people are depressed.
Okay, I'll add something: some people need serious help, and some people give so much of themselves to others that they end up losing themselves in the process. The latter can afford to be a little more selfish. I'm mainly talking about the selfishly depressed, who decide that, since they're depressed, they need to make other people depressed, too. Misery loves company, right? (and to be perfectly self-serving, I'm defending my right to be happy)
