stupid, overused storyline

Ok, I was watching High School Musical today, which is a Disney movie, and it's the same old story of athlete boy and brainy girl overcoming their cliques to get together. However, this adds a new twist: they both love to sing, and want to be in the musical, but the president of the drama club wants the leading female part, and so works hard to keep those two in their "place."

Ok, I understand that this is a tried and true kind of plot line. However, in a movie stressing the value of individuality, couldn't the writers have done something more... original? Individual? Maybe a female jock getting with a brainy male, or a skater boy with a brainy girl, or something. Not just the popular guy and the dorky girl in that ever-popular Cinderella story.
